Sgt. Davis Kring of the National Guard gives a farewell hug to grandson AJ Nelson as Nelson prepares to leave for Alabama with his stepsister and her father. Kring and his family have taken shelter in a tent city pitched in the parking lot of a strip mall just outside of Waveland, Miss. since their homes were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Kring has become an authority figure in the camp and spends his days trying to arrange resources for the refugees. "I just use evening times to sit behind a vehicle and cry myself," he says.
